Packing for Mauritania

·

If you're planning a trip to Mauritania in the near future, the country's distinctive climate calls for very careful consideration of what goes into your luggage. That's precisely why we've written this guide—to help you prepare your bags so you can set off with peace of mind and make the most of this extraordinary destination.

Clothing

In Mauritania, it's hot almost year-round, even during winter. When it comes to clothing, pack items that are lightweight, breathable, and airy. That said, when we mention lightweight clothing, we absolutely do not mean shorts and sleeveless tops! You risk severe sunburn from the intense heat. Instead, opt for clothing that covers your arms and legs to protect your skin from the sun.

Since you'll be walking—and quite a bit at that—perspiration is virtually unavoidable. Choose loose-fitting garments, and if possible, avoid cotton. While comfortable, cotton absorbs moisture, and as you perspire, your clothes will become heavier and uncomfortable for walking.

Remember to pack hats, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen to shield yourself from the intense heat.

That said, while daytime temperatures in the desert are scorching, nights are relatively cold. Temperatures hover around 5°C, and in certain seasons, they can drop below freezing. So be sure to bring a jacket or fleece for evenings and a sleeping bag for the night.

As for footwear, go for lightweight hiking shoes with sturdy soles and good ventilation to keep your feet comfortable. If possible, choose shoes you've already worn, as new ones risk causing blisters.

Equipment

In your first aid kit, include items to treat potential blisters or minor cuts. Also pack remedies for sunburn and digestive troubles. Bring saline solution to rinse your eyes after a sandstorm.

In a small daypack, stash a water bottle or canteen, sunglasses, sunscreen, a torch for nighttime, any medications you're taking, baby wipes, toilet paper, a lighter, and of course a camera to capture your adventure.
