Let's respect Mauritania and its rules

1. An urgent reminder: the mineral train is not a playground

It is strictly forbidden and strongly discouraged, for obvious safety reasons, to climb onto the ore cars of the mineral train. Yet some travelers, often influenced by social media or seeking "likes", adopt irresponsible behavior by venturing onto unsecured cars. These practices, shamelessly promoted by influencers seeking thrills, are not without consequences:

• Deadly danger for offenders (falls, crushings).

• Disruption of railway operations (delays, accident risks).

• Unnecessary local tensions, when Mauritanians are doing everything to preserve this unique experience.

A matter of common sense: Would these same people dare do the same on a freight train in Europe? Of course not. So why allow themselves in Mauritania what they would never do at home? Out of contempt for the rules? Out of disrespect for this country and its people?

2. The rules are clear: only one authorized car

• Only the passenger car of the first daily train (usually around 2 PM) is authorized for travelers, departing from both Zouérat and Nouadhibou. This car is located at the rear of a train of 200 loaded cars, ensuring traveler safety in case of incident or accident.

• Most of the journey is by night: only the Zouérat → Choum sections and arrival at Nouadhibou are daytime.

• The train carries exclusively iron ore – this is not a "tourist attraction", but an industrial tool vital to Mauritania's economy.

Recent example of irresponsibility: In this Facebook post, an individual boasts of defying the ban, with an added immature tirade ("me, I'm not tourism"). This kind of behavior discredits all travelers and risks closing access to this exceptional adventure.

→ Very bad example. Because of a few selfish people, freedoms shrink for everyone.

Official stops of the mineral train (Zouérat ↔ Nouadhibou):

1. Zouérat (departure, often from the mining area of Fdérik, 10 km from the town).

2. Choum (unique intermediate stop for passengers, 460 km from Nouadhibou and 240 km from Zouérat).

3. Nouadhibou (arrival, station on the outskirts of the city).

Other occasional stops (unofficial for passengers):

• Inal and Bon Lanuar: The train may make technical stops (crossing with another train, maintenance), but these stops are not intended for passengers and are very brief. They do not allow safe boarding or alighting.

• Ben Amera: The train passes near the famous monolith, but it does not stop for travelers. A specific tourist train (the "desert train") serves Ben Amera from Choum, but this is a separate service.

Key points to remember:

• Only Choum is an official stop where passengers can board or alight between Zouérat and Nouadhibou.

• Timimichat is not mentioned as a passenger stop in recent sources. It is likely a passage point or technical halt not accessible to the public.

• Practical advice: If you wish to visit Timimichat or its surroundings, it is recommended to go through Choum (then take local transport, such as a 4x4 or shared taxi).

Why this confusion?

• The train passes through isolated desert settlements, but only Zouérat, Choum and Nouadhibou are organized stops for passengers.

• Technical stops (such as Inal or Bon Lanuar) are unpredictable and are not designed for boarding/alighting.
